Every structure needs a strong foundation. The foundation is what connects a building with the ground. Buildings depend on foundations for stability. It ensures that the weight of the structure is properly distributed so that overloading isn’t an issue. Concrete is one of the best materials for a sturdy foundation. A foundation made from concrete can last for a very long time.
TYPES OF CONCRETE FOUNDATION
- T-Shaped: This is a popular foundation method that’s most commonly used in areas where the ground freezes during the winter months. This method requires walls to be placed atop a footing. The footing is built below the ground’s maximum depth, at a location where the soil won’t freeze. The t-shaped footing is wider than the walls, which means the base has plenty of support. The process of building a foundation like this starts with the placement of the footing. From there, walls are constructed and then poured. The slab being placed is the final step.
- Slab on grade foundation: This type of foundation has the foundation’s slab poured straight onto the ground. There’s no footing for support. The edges of the slab are thicker than other parts of the foundation. While this type of foundation can provide excellent support, it’s not suitable for all climates or regions. This is because the concrete foundation has direct contact with the ground below. It’s best for areas that don’t see harsh temperatures in the winter. With that said, it’s vulnerable to flooding.
- Raft foundation: This type of foundation consists of a single slab of concrete. This is different from a slab-on-grade foundation because the base slab of that foundation only supports the weight of a structure’s lower portion. However, raft foundations are made to support an entire building’s weight. The slab provides support to a structure’s lower section, while columns support the load from additional floors. It’s also possible to reinforce this type of foundation by building ribs or beams right into the foundation. This is an excellent option in areas with low-quality soil.
